AAP otherwise known as the Common man"s party is an Indian Political Party formally launched in Delhi on 26 November and in March 2013 it was registered as a political party by the Election Commission of India. It came into existence under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal.

The party came into existence due to the differences between two social activists Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare, who had both been involved in Team Anna, a part of the anti-corruption movement for Jan Lokpal Bill during 2011 and 2012. Hazare not being interested in politics wanted to keep the movement neutral in terms of politics but Kejriwal believed that involvement in politics was necessary to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill.

The Aam Aadmi Party or the ‘’common man party ’’ was formed with the intention that every person irrespective of class and religion would have a voice that would be heard. They worked from within the people, living the grievances the common man faced.

The party made its debut in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly Elections with a broom as its party symbol as sign to eradicate corruption from the country.

The AAP has lead several nation wide protests. Among these were-

  1. Campaigns against the hike of prices for water and electricity in Delhi, where during the protest people were asked not to pay inflated water and electricity bills. The party also demanded audit of electricity by the CAG of India (Comptroller and Auditor General).
  2. Following the Delhi Gang Rape that shook the whole nation, the party was seen demanding justice for victims of sexual harrassment and rape, which led to the passing of a stronger anti-rape law in 2013.
  3. They have also conducted campaigns to bring awareness to the people about ‘right to reject’, where the voter was given a choice to reject to vote for any of the parties by choosing ‘None of the above’ in the electronic voting machine.
