One Independence Day
It’s been a few years since Minha returned to her homeland, the land of coconut trees, Kerala. Kerala is a southern state in India, one of the most diverse and beautiful places in the world. Her grandmother used to tell her the childhood stories in India during the time of Gandhi and the time when India gained their independence from Great Britain. As she stepped foot on God’s Own Country, the soft golden-brown soil, the green-and-brown coconut trees, and the breezy wind made her fall in love with this place once again. She opened her luggage and started reading her grandmother’s memories in her diary she left for Minha.
August 15th, 1947
My whole life in India has been controlled by the tyrannical white Saayipps (English men.) And throughout the years we’ve adjusted to their rule, now it’s hard to believe that we’ve gotten our independence from them. Even though we were treated cruelly, seen as property, and didn’t have much freedom on our own, I think I’ll miss their presence, especially Frank’s presence. He was one of the rebellious Saayipps who helped us Indians to fight for our independence and cared for us. He meant a lot to me. Before the English men gave us our independence, Frank and I met for one last time before he left for Great Britain. He told me he loved me more than anything- more than his parents, more than his home country. He didn’t want to leave me alone here and go. I told him to go even though my heart cried heavily as I said that. My heart was a clock without batteries at that very precious but miserable moment. And I whispered, “If there is a man I’ll live with for the rest of my life, it will be you, and only you.” He promised me that “One day, I’ll take you to a place where nobody can find us, where we can live by ourselves, where we’ll be free to do whatever we want.” The situation created a helpless feeling inside me even though I was hopeful about my future life with him.
- ♡ Aysha
Her grandmother, Aysha, was only 16 back then, and they kept their promises. Five years after India gained its independence, they ran away to the land of freedom, America. They loved each other, lost the ones they cared, and learned what life was. Life isn’t easy. Life isn’t fair. But they learned to live through it. It’s because of them that Minha learned what hope, patience, and working together was. Once every two years she goes to visit Kerala and read her grandmother’s diary - for inspiration and reassurance that true love do exist and that anything is possible if you put your heart into it.
